Water carries impurities in it and this when passed through fluid circuits can choke a regular industrial filter. The need to have a good self-cleaning water filter system is a must in critical fluid circuits where a possibility of a shutdown is next to impossible even if it is for changing filter elements. The industrial self-cleaning filter must be designed to manage a high incidence of solid contamination without compromising on productivity and efficiency. Sungov Engineering’s self-cleaning filter systems are intended to manage solid contaminants present in water, even seawater.
What is an Industrial Self-Cleaning Strainer
Pre-treatment of water in wastewater filtration, cooling water circuits, and oil field injection circuits are some applications where the fluid flow has to be continuous. For non-stop filtered fluid flow, the need for good self-cleaning filtration is necessary. Sungov Engineering manufactures automatic self-cleaning filters that make use of the natural principles of fluid flow from high pressure to low pressure. The Differential Pressure Transmitter in the filter sends a signal to the control system. It could be a local control panel, a remote plant DCS, or both. The control system is responsible for opening the backwash valve and the motorized backwashing pipeline rotation. This completes the automation process of filter cleaning and you gain control over solid contamination from entering the circuit.
The Working of a Self-Cleaning Filter
With the self-cleaning design of the filter, you can expect an increase in production lines mainly because there is no stop in throughput due to blockages or a need to change strainer elements. The environmental-friendly filter works on the basic principle that the flow of the fluid is always from a high-pressure to a low-pressure zone. The two operation cycles in the system are the filtering cycle and the backwashing cycle.
In the filtering cycle, the water enters through the inlet nozzle, passes through the filter elements and then exits through the outlet nozzle. In this process, the contaminants are trapped on the filter element insides. In the process of filtering, the backwash return pipe assembly can block the flow to one or more filter elements. This cycle is repeated till the system reaches the set differential pressure.
The backwashing cycle commences once the system reaches the set differential pressure. This then opens the backwash valve along with the geared motor rotation. The backwash pipe assembly is now successfully aligned under filter elements. The differential pressure between the system and the backwash pipe results in the opening of the backwash valve, which discharges fluid from inside the surface of filter elements and this results in cleaning. The same process is then repeated on all the available filtering elements.
Things to know before Installing an Industrial Self-Cleaning Filter
- The filters are designed to use downstream suction force and this is why it is vital that you maintain optimal pressure on the downstream side
- The backpressure on the exhaust line affects the filtering process
- Always ensure the exhaust line is not submerged or in an incline
- Before installing the filter, you must confirm if there is enough clearance space necessary for maintenance
- Check the appropriate flush flow rate of the filter
- Upstream pump helps maintain regular water flow to the filter
